Wambui had been appointed to the CA board on December 2, 2022, replacing Gilbert Kibe, who resigned from the position.

Businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai has been appointed as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency, shortly after her position at the Communications Authority (CA) was revoked.

Her appointment was announced in a gazette notice dated August 8, 2025, by Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa, who cited Section 66 (1)(a) of the Water Act and Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 66 (1) (a) of the Water Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, appoints Mary Wambui Mungai to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency… The appointment of Charles Kamau Karondo is revoked,” the gazette notice stated.

Wambui takes over from Charles Kamau Karondo, whose appointment to the agency has been revoked with immediate effect following his move to the CA board.

The change comes after President William Ruto, in a separate gazette notice on the same date, appointed Karondo as the non-executive Chairperson of the CA Board for a three-year term, replacing Wambui.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint CHARLES KAMAU KARONDO to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from 8th August, 2025. The appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai is revoked,” the notice read.

Wambui had been appointed to the CA board on December 2, 2022, replacing Gilbert Kibe, who resigned from the position.

The Athi Water Works Development Agency is responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing water and sanitation infrastructure in Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, and other counties within its jurisdiction.

Wambui, a chief executive officer with over three decades of experience across various industries, has served on multiple boards, including Kenyatta National Hospital, where she chaired the Finance and All Purposes Committee and the Corporate Strategy and Enterprise Committee.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kenya Methodist University and a Diploma in Clearing and Forwarding from the Kenya Institute of Clearing and Forwarding.
